I shopped around quite a bit on this sander. I love Grizzly tools as they sell parts for their products and have so far to me shown great customer service. Now this sander works great on wood or metal. The 1x42 belt is very nice for sanding small pieces of wood. I do alot of Intarsia woodwork and I have several other sanders in my shop, but when i want to take just a few hairs off a piece smaller than my little fingernail I would not think of using any other tool. I set my tool up with a coarser grit on the wheel "60" and fine grit on the belt "220" use the wheel to remove alot of material and the belt to smooth it all out. This tool runs smooth and was very easy to setup.
I bought this after trying to repair my old obsolete, heavy disc/belt sander. It is much lighter and quieter than it. It is also very adjustable in order to dial it in. Awesome!
Compared to the 1x30 inch sanders on the market, this seemed to be a better, more robust solution. I wasn't really expecting to need to do so much "fiddling" to get it right, however. Initially, I was disappointed that the literature indicated a TEFC motor, yet this does NOT have one. The drive belt supplied had an awful "knob" at the seam, and caused way too much vibration. Grizzly support was very good, however, in helping me with replacement parts including the disc that stripped the set screw threads immediately, and a much better belt, that unfortunately, could not be used since it was too short to fit. Ultimately, we needed to arrange for a longer (non-standard) belt, whereupon EVERY piece of the sander had to be re-adjusted and fine tuned to make it fit. The sander does now seem to be working properly, but be prepared to do some fine tuning.
Good unit for a small shop. I had a shop built 8" disc sander. Very useful but I wanted a 1x42 belt sander for sharpening and polishing. This unit fits in the same spot as the old disc sander. Its quite a bit more noisy so I deducted a star. I like that there are 2 dust extraction ports. The belts change easily if you leave the belt guard off. The belt platen removes easily with one bolt for polishing.
This may not be Grizzly's best product. It came with a defective table, a defective belt, and the sanding disk had to be taped to hold the set screw that holds it on the shaft. Grizzly replaced the table and the belt (always great customer service) and I taped the aluminum hole for a new set screw. Now it seems to be fine but was surprised to find these defects from a Grizzly tool that costs so much. With everything replaced and ready to go, I'm looking forward to enjoying using this sander for years to come.
When I decided to get a new belt sander, I went directly to Grizzly as my "tool vendor" of choice. I zeroed in on the 42" model and started to read some of the comments. Most were good but some were commenting on the quality not being up to the normal Grizzly standard, and, there was some initial operational/setup problems. Regardless of the negative comments, I decided to go with my guy and order it (hoping that I wouldn't have similar issues as some others). I'm happy to say that the unit came in as described, I put it together (first tried to do it without reading the instructions then had to break down my macho and get the manual out.....) Anyway, after putting it together and turning it on for the first time, all seems to be working just fine. I have not seen any of the issues described in some of the comments - the only negative is that the package shorted me 2 small screws and washers (I'll get new ones next time I'm at Lowes).
