Bought, shipped same day, arrived 2 DAYS LATER. Damn, that is some fast shipping! Arrived completely intact, no damage. Unpacked it, assembled mobile base and started assembling/checking out the fit and finish. This is where I find myself at least preliminarily a little bit wary of a few things. First thing I have to say is that I've never had to spend as much time and sweat to clean off the industrial oil used as a rust barrier from the manufacturer. This stuff was CAKED on and dry, not oily but more like it was baked on there in a 1/16" layer. Worse was that it was also all over the cutterhead and knives! After about an hour with a combination of large quantities of solvents, 3M pads, and a lot of cursing, I was finally able to get most of it off, though certainly some still lingers on the cutterhead because that's just not an easy part to clean. I find this pretty obnoxious. Second, while cleaning both the jointer tables and planer table underneath, it gave me some time to check out the machine. Fit and finish is not super impressive, paint spray on some parts that it shouldn't be on, some small chips in the paint missing in some areas, plastic caps on the fence mount arm look like they were cut by a three year old in a hurry. The fence is aluminum--albeit heavy aluminum--and while the end mount style fence is a feature I like I would prefer there to be some kind of reinforcement close to the cutterhead to stop any variation as well as a heavier duty, cast iron fence. I don't see why the end mount wasn't designed so that it could rotate up and away with the table so that one doesn't have to remove the fence every time switching to planer mode, and then reseat and recalibrate the fence when returning to jointer mode. I have no idea what the heck the plastic "rear guard link" is supposed to achieve since it's not attached to anything, and also WHY IS IT PLASTIC?! Delivered to my door, I paid $2,900 for this: I DON'T WANT TO SEE PLASTIC PARTS ON MY MACHINE. Some machines right off of the truck just blow me away by how well setup and calibrated from the factory they are and this truly makes my life so much easier. Not so with the G0634XP. Basically just need to recalibrate as the tolerances aren't tight enough in the parallelism/coplanar realm of things. One other thing is the Shop Fox Heavy Duty Mobile Base I purchased with this: it's bad. Not because the base doesn't what it should, but because the casters are terrible. Moving this thing around on my flat concrete floors is like pushing a 500lb rock in sand. Needs beefier casters, don't see why there can't be all 4 swivel casters instead of 2 swivel and 2 fixed on it as well. All that being said...
...I haven't ran it through it's paces yet, and I'm sure once I get it calibrated and up to snuff I'll be happy enough. Given that this particular machine was awarded "Best Overall" by Finewoodworking in the combo machines category, I'm not pleasantly surprised by the quality right away and currently am maybe wishing I had just ordered one of the parallel bed jointers instead of a combo machine, but hopefully I'll get used to it and everything will work. We'll see!
Ordered. Received quickly. About one week. This machine works excellent. Leaves a nice finish. I use about 5-10 times a week. Small lumber, fat lumber. I've planed down to as little as 3/16". I've put some exceptionally hard oak through with results that are pleasing. A real quality machine. It's cheaper than comparable machines with a fair shipping price. I will definitely be buying more
Grizzly products. Probably a large bandsaw or tablesaw.
