My Planer came with a blown bearing. Grizzly was extremely quick at sending me out an upgraded bearing that should have already came in the machine. The metal out feed roller causes deep embossing. I called tech support and was told they would look into sending me a rubber out feed roller and I have been waiting for them to call me back for over 2 weeks. I recently went to rotate the carbide tips and I stripped the bolt holding one of the tips using the tool that Grizzly provided. I then broke the tip of the tool off trying to removed another carbide tip... they were definitely over tightened in factory.
Apple Country Woodcrafters, NPO, replaced an underpowered yellow colored planer with this G0453Z and we could not be happier. It is so quiet we can carry on a conversion when we are standing next to it.
I like this planer and it certainly does the job I anticipated. One thing I dislike about the planer is the low quality of the dust collector hood. It is made of flimsy thin gauge sheet metal and the hose connector portion is aimed straight instead of angled right or left.
The raising and lowering of the machine is downright dangerous. IE: If it is raised and you wish to lower it, you MUST put your foot UNDER the lever to release the UP-LOCK.
When you do this, the machine comes SLAMMING down in a horrendous way and makes a hell of a noise. I see NO way to solve this problem without redesigning a VERY poor mechanical design. Which I suppose I will have to do to keep the machine from bashing itself to pieces.
Also:raising and lowering of the table makes all kind of mechanical noises. I was unable to determine why. In addition the shaft attached to the handle, wobbles badly when raising or lowering.
Thirdly: Installing the dust chute, is a joke. Poorly designed.
Finally: the outfeed roller, leaves marks on the stock. It is my understanding that others have complained about this. Outfeed rollers should NOT be serrated; as this one is. Also; it is my understand that Grizzly is aware of this, and future modes will come with smooth outfeed rollers. But get this: IF any customer wants to replace the serrated roller and install a smooth roller; even if it is brand new; Grizzly WILL charge them $79.00 dollars plus shipping. I KNOW this because I asked them to do it at their cost, and they refused.
I bought this after looking at the Powermatic (exact model except for a few minor cosmetic changes); because the Grizzly was over a thousand times less.
Now I see why. "Ya git whatcha pay fer".
Planer exceeds my expectations. I have planed walnut and hickory so far and it chews through it like butter. The spiral cutterhead was worth every penny. Beautiful cuts and it is soooo much quieter than traditional blades. 100% thumbs up!!
I bought this machine a month ago I love it an I recommend for any one any time not only this but for all the machines that I have bought from grizzly it's all outstanding. I like to think grizzly for the great product and for the great service thanks team grizzly.
This is my second major tool purchase from Grizzly, my first is a G0555 band saw with the riser block. Both have exceeded my expatiation's.
The Spiral head works well and is very quiet. The dust collection on the Planer is superb, I connect to a cyclone dust collector.
This is by far a super machine , boards coming out looking fine
I love it and wish I had purchased one long ago. Had a little trouble with the feed roll drive chain but grizzly sent out new chains in a matter of days .Very good customer service.
i went into business in july 2015 and purchased this machine. the growth of my business far exceeded my expectations and this little brute kept right up with it. i was planing thousands of board feet of oak, hickory, jatoba and other hardwoods weekly and it kept pace without giving up the ghost. the amount of abuse this machine took is inconceivable and i have no intention of selling it.
this machine turned me into a grizzly fan. i am now moving up to a 20" planer for bigger purchase orders and i would be foolish to buy anything but another grizzly.
