Planer arrived by U.P.S. freight, and was packaged in a wooden crate. No damage at all to package or planer. I decided to try the Grizzly after my brand new Dewalt bench top let me down planing some 100 year old barn oak. The Grizzly worked it up with no problem! Very quiet machine. I would highly recommend this baby! Just be sure to check the gear oil, and tighten the drain plug when it arrives.
Mine came yesterday and it is everything. Super quiet compared to the two knife Rigid that I have had for over 20 years. This spiral cutter-head is the real deal. I have an engine hoist but if you don't have that or a forklift you may not be able to install the mobile base wheels. It weighs 600 lbs. and is solid machinery. The height wheel spins like butter. Transmission shifting is smooth. I'm happy, happy, happy.
Let me begin with the good news. Overall I am very pleased with this machine. I have overworked and replaced two portable planers prior to purchasing this one and there is no comparison between this one and the previous machines. It is very QUIET and the operation is flawless. I have already planed many board feet of maple and birds eye maple with absolutely no tear out. I love it!
However, when I first unpacked and setup the machine, it would not start. I contacted Technical support who had me realign the centrifugal switch. Still no luck. Since it was the weekend and Technical support was not available, I began troubleshooting on my own. I found that the motor would run if I reduced the load by loosening the belts. Even after doing this, the motor struggled to start. I contacted Technical support who then sent me a new capacitor. That fixed the problem and I am off to the races.
By profession, I am a Quality Assurance Engineer. Before purchasing this planer I read several reviews written several years ago on the same model in which the capacitor was an issue. I guess the engineers at Grizzly and the manufacturing plant in China have not figured this out yet. In my plant, root cause and corrective actions would have been completed after the first incident.
Without the initial issues this review would have been a 5 star. Still pleased with the machine.
