I compared many other chucks to this one. This chuck is of all metal construction and very well made. Some of these come with plastic backs or worse yet no backs... Seriously some of these come with no backs!! Great to let in all your wood chips!!
This tool moves smoothly and I have used it to make several things including some custom furniture knobs. This chuck held tightly and never loosened its grip! I would buy this again and would suggest you buy this over some of the more expensive chucks.
Picked this up as a Christmas gift for my dad and his 20+ year old Rockwell lathe. The 1x8 threading matched the head stock threading perfectly. The chuck, using the #2 round jaws, held a 7.5" diameter chunk of wet oak as the inside of a bowl was roughed out. For the first time using a chuck everything worked perfectly right out of the box. Truly, this chuck has given new life to an old lathe.\r\n\r\nThe removal of one star is due to the very cheap case being damaged at some point prior to arrival. While the case does hold the chuck components, the black plastic sides won't hold up to any abuse and the case should be considered adequate for shelf storage, at the most. If that doesn't matter to you or the case will be discarded, then my initial experience with this chuck has been five stars.
