Manufactured in the USA by Byrd®, these indexable carbide insert cutterheads are very well made and leave a great finish. The inserts are positioned along a spiral pattern, and rotate at a slight angle for a shearing action that leaves a glassy smooth cut on the toughest of woods. Comes with all 40 inserts on the cutterhead, plus 5 extras.

Worthwhile upgrade 10/17/2018

I upgraded to this cutterhead and so far the results are pleasing. It does leave a slight checkerboard pattern on the wood, but it is so shallow a simple sanding removes it. I would second the other reviewer comments that you need a bearing, not gear, puller to get the bearings off the old head. The distance between the bearing and the cutter head is too narrow for most gear puller teeth to fit. Jointer only makes 97db now. More than 10 times quieter than my planer with straight knives. If you like surfaces so flat they develop a suction to the outfeed table, you will like this cutterhead. And if you hit a staple you don't spend 1 hr re-setting blades to atone.

I purchased this item and it was easy to install. There was some confusion with Grizzly regarding the need for new bearings. One correspondent said I needed them so I ordered them, but they were not needed. It would have been better if the technician I placed the order with knew they were not required. Now I have the hassle of sending them back. The installation required a three-arm bearing puller. When to the local Auto Zone store and they applied the right tool and removed the bearings. Meant a trip but the store manager was a woodworker as well and we discussed the pros and cons of knives vs helix heads on jointers.

This is a super product. 3/29/2018

I cannot say enough good things about this product. It is much quieter, less tear out on tough grain wood. I would recommend it to anyone. Thanks for a great product!!

JOINTER UPGRADE 2/26/2018

my order arrived in perfect condition as it was packed very well. the cutterhead was a perfect fit and went together easily. I opted to keep the original bearings as my jointer did not have a lot of hours on it but if you go this route I recommend that you use a proper bearing separator/puller as most wheel/gear pullers do not work due to the bearings being so close to the cutter head main body. I did note that the original bearings on the jointer came from Japan and the replacement bearings offered by Grizzly are of Chinese origin. The install went very smoothly and after a bit of set up the first trial run on a piece of rock maple produced almost a mirror finish. I would definitely recommend this product, it is well worth the cost.

Outstanding performance! This cutterhead is worth the money. Should have purchased it sooner.

Increase in surface quality, reduction in noise. 7/12/2017

This is my third Shelix cutter head. The noise reduction is immediately noticeable. Surface quality is directly related to feed rate, from very good to excellent.

Great product very happy 6/27/2017

Installed very easily. I bought new bearings, as this model doesn't come with them. Jointer is much quieter, and cuts like a dream, even on figured woods.

I purchased this in January for my 8" planar to upgrade from my HSS cutter. This runs quite and yields a good surface. However, I really need to slow the feed rate to get a decent surface relative to the HSS.

Better than expected 1/29/2017

This cuts Iike a hot knife through butter. Get the new bearings it is worth the cost. Installation was easy and only took about 40 minutes. You can hardly tell it's cutting it's so smooth. Wish I had done it a long time ago.
