Nice tool holders. 10/31/2018

The bad: The boring bar shank is not square, but rather rectangular in section (taller than it is wide), making it unusable in my tool post holders. Though the threading tool itself is a good design, but the carbide insert for it is not sharp enough, or shaped with any relief or rake, to form a nice clean thread, plus it has a pretty big radius at the tip, making it only useful for turning large pitch threads of about 12tpi or less. I just grind my own threading bits from 1/4" HSS tool blanks. The grooving tool is not a good design. It has too much back rake on the top with not enough relief on the sides or front and the carbide insert is not sharp enough to provide a good, clean groove. The insert on mine broke within a few uses.

The good: This set has most of the tool holders one needs to start basic turning, facing, threading, chamfering and grooving. The carbide insert shapes for the turning and facing tools are some of the more popular shapes out there, so finding replacements when the time comes will be easy. It is nice that a basic insert for steel is supplied with each holder, making it convenient for starting out. The holders are made from good hardened steel with a decent finish. The pockets and retaining screws for the carbide inserts are nice and tight and they should last a good long time for moderate users and home shop folks. I love the offset of the holders, allowing turning right up to the chuck or a shoulder. Even without the boring bar or the grooving tool, this set still represents a pretty dang good deal. The toolholders that work, work very well. Despite a couple flaws, I still like this set enough to recommend it.
