Great tool 05/24/2020 4:23:32 PM

Have wanted a disc slander for years, and finally found a need also for a small belt sander, so I took the plunge. Seems a little noisy, but does a great job! Be sure to order extra belts. It comes with one each 80 grit belt and disc. I purchased my first Grizzly tool sometime around 1980. Still satisfied!

Heavy duty but hard to assemble 04/03/2020 12:51:40 PM

The parts seem pretty heavy duty and overall well made. My complaint is the assembly instructions are not very good and it was not originally designed to be an easy to assemble product and have an easy ability to ensure tension on the motor to the two sanders

The first tool send to me was defective. The keyway for the table for the disk sander was not properly machined. It took three phone calls over several days before a replacement tool was sent to me. The second tool was correct and I am pleased with the sanders performance.

It's alright. 09/23/2019 12:26:05 PM

The sanding disk plate is way out of balance. The machine can't be operated with the disk attached for the vibration is too violent. I turned it down, took some of the rattle out but it's now a 7" instead of an 8". Had to do a few things to the rest of the machine to get it working the way it's supposed to but the sanding disk plate shouldn't have even been sent with the machine. I understand most companies have a quality control department. The machine was nowhere near ready to be sent out. Once you get the bugs out it's a good product.

Good for occasional home use 09/01/2019 5:52:02 PM

Setting up and adjusting the main belt was difficult. The instructions was not complete enough. Could not fit any of the wrenches I have (and I have plenty of automotive types) on one of the motor mounting nuts. Left it tight but not fully secured. The other three were adequately tightened. Adjusting fore/aft of the wheel was awkward but ultimately seemed OK after much disassembly/assembly and trial and error. After plenty of trial and error for a few hours I seem to have gotten the sander to function adequately and am able to use it with no internal obstructions, reasonably quiet and shake free.
I would only recommend this for someone with good mechanical ability and experience.

Small scale, big results. 08/16/2019 8:59:47 PM

Several years ago I bought the big combo sander, the 6x48 w/12 disc. (G1276) It was/is everything I wanted. Powerful, accurate, heavy & dependable. Unfortunately, sometimes it was just too big. What I came to realize was I also needed all the same attributes in a second sander, on a slightly smaller scale. Luckily for me, I had signed up for the Grizzly email updates & was sent info on this little machine. (& I got it on sale)
Powerful, accurate, heavy & dependable... on a smaller scale.
No real complaints on this that really matter. The only thing I didnt like is the access panel for the belt is plastic. I expected it to be metal like my big machine.

17 year old grandson loves it! 08/11/2019 2:42:01 AM

This goes very well in the hobby of knife making.
I read the reviews and I always read the one star reviews.
Ours runs quiet and performs as I expected.
It has plenty of power and it was easy to assemble.
If you know how to align a motor and pulleys and set belt tension you'll be fine.
Simple as that!!!

I bought this to replace another sander my son burned up grinding a forged knife blade. I had no missing parts and it went together pretty well. Some fussing around to get everything lined up but easily done in about an hour. It runs well. It got a full shakedown this past weekend with finishing up the same knife we killed the first sander with. I don't find the noise to be objectionable but it is not quiet. I wouldn't mind if it had a bit more power but it is sufficient to get the job done. After an hour of heavy work the motor got pretty hot so I wouldn't recommend this for a full on industrial setting but for a home workshop it's pretty good. Certainly the fact that it has a table for the belt AND for the disk is really useful. That both tables are heavy duty is also good. All in all I'm very satisfied with my choice.

Good well built, well designed 03/27/2019 2:32:24 PM

A very well built and designed machine. It is engineered via a heavier and casting. I feel it is better than its competitors in this range. It was easy to assemble and will service my needs very well. Good job Grizzly.

This is an excellent sander. I purchased it because it is made of cast Iron so its heavy and vibration is non-existent. Because it has both the disc and belt its perfect for the small parts in the models I make. Again a great machine

Works pretty good, but was missing the set screw for the disc to attach. I emailed Grizzly and was told I needed to go look up the serial # of the machine and determine the set screw part # before the would help me. It ended up just being easier and faster to just go buy a set screw from the local hardware store.

A great 1"x42" belt sander with 8" disc sander 01/16/2018 5:53:56 AM

I bought this sander about a month ago and have just gotten around to putting it together. It is a well designed and manufactured sander, I glad I chose this one over the others because of the quality build. The cast iron tables are way superior to the cheaper aluminum ones. This is a heavy well-built sander that will last a lifetime if taken care of.

Very good product for small shop 12/21/2017 5:42:44 PM

Purchased this product December 21 2017. The machine is built solid and runs smooth. No vibration problems, It has plenty of power. The only minor issues I have is the screws that mount the motor belt cover could be a little longer. They barely catch the threads in the sander housing. I replaced one of them with a longer screw I had in my shop. Also when the table is set perpendicular to the disc the pointer must be set at a severe angle to line up with zero on the protractor scale. Either the protractor should be moved or the screw hole for the pointer should be moved so the pointer aligns properly with the protractor scale. The warning labels were not adhering to the sander body because it was oily. I removed them, cleaned the surface and then they stuck fine. I look forward to many hours of use with this tool.

I purchased the H8192 1 x 42 to be used for hobby knife-making. I was a bit concerned about quality and power under load, but I decided to take a chance. I wanted something affordable, but heavier then the cheap 1 x 30's. Upon opening, I was struck by the weight of the sander. This is no light-weight. All parts were included and machining seemed good, especially for the cost. Assembly is not easy, but doable. A second pair of hands would have been useful. The assembly instructions are not the best and are not always clear. That being said, the machine went together, and parts seem to fit well. Of course I had to try it out once assembled so I grabbed an old knife with chipped edge and put the Grizzly to the test. In a few minutes, I had a clean new edge waiting to be honed. I also took a piece of hard burl wood and tried the 8" disc sander. While I'm not too excited about the miter gauge which comes with the sander, the disc sander works well, without bogging down. Seems to have plenty of power and once I finish my grinding jig, I think I'll have a very nice tool for my purposes. There's something special about affordable tools that get the job done. And this Grizzly sure fits the bill!

Nice looking heavy/stable table model unit. 10/06/2017 12:28:50 AM

Ordered on line with 10% discount. Assembly took awhile as mounting bolts were too long, disc sander housing bolt slots too short, motor pulley frozen on shaft and could not be adjusted to ease belt line up to sander pulley. 1 motor mounting bolt close to sander base and way too difficult to put a wrench on for final adjustments.
Up and running now and if you don't mind the usual foreign made problems, non-sequential assembly guide photos, then yes, still a good buy.

Not without its problems 09/24/2017 1:05:00 PM

I purchased this machine for knife sharpening and for the price, I consider the fit and finish reasonably good. The machine is of decent weight but it has vibration issues that make fine sharpening difficult. I've carefully aligned the motor and pulley assembly. I also installed a link-belt to hopefully reduce vibration, but it persists. I don't know if it's a bearing issue in the pulley attachment - the pulleys are all plastic, which may be part of the issue. When I run the motor with no load, I get no vibration. If I'm unable to resolve the problem, I'll likely sell this machine on the used market. All that said, I have a number of Grizzly woodworking tools and have always found them to perform at or above expectations.

This sander was bought 6 weeks ago and assembled the evening after delivery. The caliper needle indicator was not delivers and one v-belt cover screw was to short. After notifying Grizzly theses issue were addressed very efficient and professional manner, new parts arrived in a very short time.
The product performs very well and above my expectations. It has a very sturdy and stable metal casting construction, no vibrations whatsoever. It's not mounted to a table just placed loosely on work surface when used. I do recommend this product to anybody needing a belt and disc sander at a very reasonable price. Jet sanders are too expensive and there quality and performance are 0% better than Grizzly's tools. I guess it's the Jet's white paint that's the expensive part.

This is a heavy-duty 42 inch sander. Assembly was not too difficult, but I had to retap the threads on one hole for the main mount. (Quality control take note!) A half inch shorter bolt would have worked, too. After assembly, the disc required repeated adjustment to get proper gap between table and disc, no big deal. Belt tracking is good, swapping belts easy. I have no experience with other products, but this sander does the job for me!

Just what I needed 06/02/2017 10:30:11 PM

It's louder than I expected. And the set screw for the disc stripped before I even felt it snug up. Aluminum...not good for a set screw. I installed a 6-32 thread insert and was in business. Aside from the louder than expected noise level, it does exactly what I bought it to do and am glad that it is a part of my shop.

not very easy to assemble, dust collector port is odd size 05/06/2017 6:21:54 PM

I like it, but not easy to assemble. A lot of plastic on Guards, and the dust collector port is an odd size.
I like all the different belt grit available, relatively easy to change the belt. But came with only one.

Just what I was looking for! 02/08/2017 11:30:09 AM

When I decided to get a new belt sander, I went directly to Grizzly as my "tool vendor" of choice. I zeroed in on the 42" model and started to read some of the comments. Most were good but some were commenting on the quality not being up to the normal Grizzly standard, and, there was some initial operational/setup problems. Regardless of the negative comments, I decided to go with my guy and order it (hoping that I wouldn't have similar issues as some others). I'm happy to say that the unit came in as described, I put it together (first tried to do it without reading the instructions then had to break down my macho and get the manual out.....) Anyway, after putting it together and turning it on for the first time, all seems to be working just fine. I have not seen any of the issues described in some of the comments - the only negative is that the package shorted me 2 small screws and washers (I'll get new ones next time I'm at Lowes).

Good with repairs 01/28/2017 11:34:09 PM

This may not be Grizzly's best product. It came with a defective table, a defective belt, and the sanding disk had to be taped to hold the set screw that holds it on the shaft. Grizzly replaced the table and the belt (always great customer service) and I taped the aluminum hole for a new set screw. Now it seems to be fine but was surprised to find these defects from a Grizzly tool that costs so much. With everything replaced and ready to go, I'm looking forward to enjoying using this sander for years to come.

Good sander for the price. 01/26/2017 10:13:31 PM

Good unit for a small shop. I had a shop built 8" disc sander. Very useful but I wanted a 1x42 belt sander for sharpening and polishing. This unit fits in the same spot as the old disc sander. Its quite a bit more noisy so I deducted a star. I like that there are 2 dust extraction ports. The belts change easily if you leave the belt guard off. The belt platen removes easily with one bolt for polishing.

Somewhat of a do-it-yourself kit 01/26/2017 1:57:31 PM

Compared to the 1x30 inch sanders on the market, this seemed to be a better, more robust solution. I wasn't really expecting to need to do so much "fiddling" to get it right, however. Initially, I was disappointed that the literature indicated a TEFC motor, yet this does NOT have one. The drive belt supplied had an awful "knob" at the seam, and caused way too much vibration. Grizzly support was very good, however, in helping me with replacement parts including the disc that stripped the set screw threads immediately, and a much better belt, that unfortunately, could not be used since it was too short to fit. Ultimately, we needed to arrange for a longer (non-standard) belt, whereupon EVERY piece of the sander had to be re-adjusted and fine tuned to make it fit. The sander does now seem to be working properly, but be prepared to do some fine tuning.

This Sander is a great tool! Performs very well at many different tasks! 01/01/2016 5:28:21 PM

I shopped around quite a bit on this sander. I love Grizzly tools as they sell parts for their products and have so far to me shown great customer service. Now this sander works great on wood or metal. The 1x42 belt is very nice for sanding small pieces of wood. I do alot of Intarsia woodwork and I have several other sanders in my shop, but when i want to take just a few hairs off a piece smaller than my little fingernail I would not think of using any other tool. I set my tool up with a coarser grit on the wheel "60" and fine grit on the belt "220" use the wheel to remove alot of material and the belt to smooth it all out. This tool runs smooth and was very easy to setup.
