G0505 12-1/2" 2 HP Benchtop Planer

Portable, Light, Perfect.

We wanted a portable planer that was lighter to carry around and finished cuts faster, but didn’t lack muscle or design quality. What happened?

We designed the Grizzly G0505 12-1/2" 2 HP Benchtop Planer and were awarded Top Value by WOOD Magazine for its overall performance against the competition.

This 12-1/2" planer features a 2 HP motor, 10,000 RPM cutterhead, 32 FPM feed rate, top-mounted return rollers, and extra-large table extensions.

Additional features like 1/8"-thick knives (instead of the 1/16" thick knives on most portables) are proof that this dynamo will rule the jobsite for years!

Like all of the Grizzly Planers, the G0505 comes with a 1-year warranty covering parts and assuring the unit is free from factory defects. (Consumables are not covered by the warranty.)

The manual for the G0505 was written by our US-based Documentation Department and is packed with useful information. The complete and easy to read manual makes it easier to assemble and maintain your planer.

The Grizzly Customer Service and Technical Support Teams are U.S. based. Parts and accessories for the planer are available on-line and shipped from the Grizzly parts warehouse in Springfield, MO.

I have wanted a thickness planer for quite some time. I build Banjos. I quit looking for a thickness planer due to the expense. A year or more ago my interest was peaked again when I found a thickness planer at the Harbor Freight store. I examined the best I could in the store. I then went to Lowe's and looked at the planers they had on display. I already own a Grizzly table saw, so I knew its' quality, so I looked to Grizzly. Wow, would you believe it, but the Grizzly G0505 was on sale. This planer has a cast iron base, steel shroud, and the thing that sold it to me was that the blades are 1/4" thick. All of the other planers that I looked at had only 1/16" thick blades, The HFT was almost $ 200.00 less than the Grizzly after considering shipping, but it was stamped steel and plastic shroud.
I set up my planer as soon as I received it, and bolted it to a tool base. I then proceeded to plane some mahogany for a new banjo neck. The results were so smooth. I was delighted, so I planed some maple for another neck. I had so much fun that I didn't want to stop. This is one fine machine.

Product came in a timely manner in packaging that was very well protected thus it arrived in great shape with no problems noted. Set up was easy and the machine was tested on dry rough sawn white ash and it did a very nice job. Happy I made the purchase.

Great Grizzly Planner and Shop Fox Table Saw 05/21/2020 5:09:48 PM

I learned about woodworking 30 years ago in Northern Illinois and had a basement workshop, which I had to give up when I moved to Arizona 15 years ago. I received a Kobalt table saw from Lowes, last Christmas, but It was not up to the specifications I would want to do project I envisioned. The Shop Fox tablesaw and Grizzly thickness planner have much better features than even the Delta products I had before. Im still setting up a garage shop now, but I am confident I have the capability of completing my intended projects. I really love this table saw.

Don't let the size of this little planer fool you it's AWESOME !!! 01/02/2020 4:53:20 PM

This little planer really does a fantastic job , it's just as good as the industrial planer that my dad uses in his kitchen cabinet shop . My dad has been in the cabinet manufacturing business for over 60 years and I've used his industrial planer thousands of times , but this little Grizzly planer is no joke , it really does a fantastic job , just don't try to force it to plane more than it's capable of doing in a single pass and it should do great for any small home shop or small woodworking business . The wood has such a smooth finish after it passes thru the planer . Again , like I said , just don't try to over work this little planer and make sure you don't run any wood with nails or anything else that would dull or chip the blades and it will do any job that you need it to do . I highly recommend this planer to anyone who needs a planer for a small shop on a limited budget . For the price and size you simple cannot beat this deal !!!

Very happy with planner 03/27/2019 12:32:39 PM

The Products direction were very easy to follow and had minimal steps to set the product up for use.
Planner has more than enough power and the knives do a great job on both soft and hardwoods.

Overall a good product 02/02/2019 8:27:50 PM

For the $$ you can't beat this planer. It has plenty of power, clears chips well, and doesn't leave too much snipe. For a 2 blade planer it leaves a very smooth finish as well. I really like the rollers on the I feed and outfeed tables too!
My issue is with the rollers on the top. They are an excellent idea and I was excited for that feature, but they are poorly designed. Rather than using screws to hold the rollers in place they used straight metal rod about 1/2" long. Within the first 10min of using the machine the pins were pushing thru and the rollers falling off. For a while I continued to put them back in, but eventually gave up. I plan to modify it myself to use screws like they did on the feed tables.
After about a month of use, this planer has not held up. I plane a lot of white and red oak that is rough hewn. It took no time to dull the blades, with only a 2 blade cutterhead it just beats them up. If you are planning soft woods and not using it frequently you will be fine. But if you plan to run her halfway hard, you're better off spending more.

Great value 12/06/2018 9:49:45 PM

I have run over 60 feet of chainsaw milled lumber of various width and thickness without a single problem. Boards come out super smooth and even. Easy to adjust, scale is right on. Light enough to carry with built in handles, set on table or stand then tuck away on storage shelf.

Good, low cost planer 05/23/2018 11:58:49 AM

While this is a very good, economical planer, I don't think I'd give it a five star rating - four and a half stars would be more appropriate as there are a couple things (the bed, the sheet metal parts) that I would prefer to be more solid. That said, I'm happy to have it - it beats hand planing or carting material to someone else's shop. Very good price. Now all I need is a similarly economical, wide jointer.

Good product for the money 05/03/2018 10:34:04 AM

I had the model GO832 on order/backorder for 2 months and couldn't get a commitment from Grizzly when order would be filled. So I substituted and received model GO505 and was shipped promptly.
I got it to mill heavy pieces of walnut for fireplace mantle, bench seats and shelve boards for our new construction . I've only run about 100 board ft. through it but the unit has performed nicely with what I've put through it. If you need planer for making your living you would do well to look at the large heavy units but for homeowner hobbyist it gives you bang for your buck.

Runs good! 02/27/2018 2:38:04 AM

Only reason it s not a 5 Star review is because I also got the dust port as well. It hangs a bit low, recommend a homemade dust/chip port. Could easily fab a better one and plan too. Overall I am pleased with the unit. If I knew tht the 3 blade u it was 10-20 $more would have bought it.

Thus is a good product. The only reason I gave it a 4 star is sometimes the wood has a problem getting pushed through the planer and needs assistance. Good product though.

Works like a dream. I had a Delta 12 planer and the motor blew out 1 month after the warranty ran out. It didnt have a good dust collector with the opening only about 1/2 opening to a 4 hose.
I love my new Planer. It has a large opening to the 4 dust collector and it planes like a dream. My cherry coffee table came out amazing. I will be replacing some other of my Delta products with Grizzly.

Have had this machine for years!! 11/16/2017 12:36:30 AM

I bought this machine many years ago. It works great. I have planed many types of wood with it. Mostly Oak and Walnut. I have no complaints. Great Machine!! UPDATE.. My old planer finally gave it up. I used this machine for about 13 years. I felt I got my money out of it. So I purchased another one just like it. I shopped around. Checking out other makes of planers. I just felt no one else makes a machine that can compare with this one.

Sound product. 06/07/2017 11:58:10 PM

I bought this product about 6 weeks ago and have used it several times. I am pleased with it's performance and the results. I would recommend 2 changes: make it about 40-50 lbs. heavier to cut down on vibration, and make the dust collection adapter fit better and mount easier. I am pleased with this product and would buy it again.

Great product 06/05/2017 3:33:35 AM

Superb Quality! 06/01/2017 9:09:17 PM

I bought this a few weeks ago and right out of the box I was super pleased with it. Anything that I have thrown at it so far has not been a problem. I have used almost every brand out there such as Dewalt, Porter Cable, Craftsman and Makita so far Grizzly has out performed them all. I do a lot of re purposing and up-cycling with lumber and as long as it is clean I have no complaints about this planer.

04/22/2017 2:12:48 PM

I purchased this some time ago to replace my 12.5 inch planer molder I have had for many years. The old planer molder broke a shaft and several parts were damaged. I don't do as much woodworking as I used to so I decided to get the smaller portable unit to make more space in my workshop. I just set it up a few days ago and started planing rough sawed cherry and walnut lumber. It worked well but seemed under powered. Planing an 8 x 1 inch board set for a 1/32 cut the planer choked down too easily. Actually the width of the cut was only 3 inch wide to start the planing because the board was somewhat bowed. A significant increase in powder would make it a much better planer.

Great Planer 02/19/2017 4:11:38 AM

This Planer works great, a little noisey, i think it will quiet down once we throw in our carbide blades. A much better planner than a rigid or anything you'd get out of the box store, and it's for a fair reasonable price.

James K
I think it will be great. 02/02/2017 3:56:59 PM

happy i found this company, i have been wanting a planer for some time, i just never found one of my liking until i stumbled across a youtube video of this one, what these 2 guys put this thru and it just kept on working was quite impressive, this sealed the deal, plus i got it on sale under 300.00, and was even able to finance it. it is all steel construction, it not really loud, and it does a awesome job on making reclaimed wood look new again. i will be buying a lathe from them as well. thank you for making awesome product.

Good deal 12/26/2016 12:09:51 AM

I bought one ten years ago and have been very happy with it. The brushes finally need replacing, didn't have time to deal with it, so I bought another one and order the brushes. When I have time, I will replace the brushes and pass it on to my son. Great deal for a small, inexpensive planer.

great product 11/01/2015 9:53:48 AM
