Delivered low on gear oil 06/09/2019 4:39:49 PM

I love the machine but I was irritated because it was delivered very low on gear oil. When they fill it at the factory they are not giving it enough time for all the air to come to the surface. The factory needs to top off the machines before they leave or ship the machine with an extra pint of gear oil.

G1021X2 15" 3 HP Extreme Series Planer w/ Spiral Cutterhead 06/09/2019 4:02:22 PM

I have waited for this planer for a while now, It came to my house well packed and in perfect shape. All the setting were dead on out of the crate. Small amount of assembly and cleaning the packing grease off but after checking it over and adding gear oil to the machine it was ready to work. My only complaint is that they did not send gear oil with it.

Product was delivered in perfect conditions. If you don't have a forklift (Most homes don't), it does require 4-guys to move off shipping crate. It does have bars to grip. We used these to support 2x4's which provided an easy means of 4-guys lifting the unit. Assembly was straight forward. Take extra time to ensure the in-feed & Out-feed tables are level. Had a 220 line installed, and turned it on...Everything worked perfectly. This is definitely a planer designed for a production environment. Finished pieces are ready for finish sanding...no need for 80 Grit sanding to remove knife marks. Noise level was much lower than expected. Highly recommended for a serious woodworker.

This baby is a money maker! 03/26/2019 9:51:21 PM

12 Year user of this machine in professional furniture/cabinet shop. Just completed a rebuild of the gearbox, as things started leaking (slightly) a while ago. Not surprisingly, the two smallest gears transferring power from cutter head to gear drive for feed rollers had pretty extreme wear. However, Pleasantly surprised parts are readily available from Grizzly and very reasonably priced. Debated replacing vs repairing. In hindsight, I may simply replace in the future, but truth is mine's good to go another dozen years. This is an outrageous value, considering the dollar figures it's generated over the years. If considering this machine:
1> Do not waste one dollar on a machine without the spiral carbide head. I've rotated mine to 4th fresh edge now, with another year or two before full replacement needed. Just a month ago, I broke my first and only carbide chip in 12 years. A particularly nasty knot in pine, angled perfectly to jam into cutter head. Machine never hesitated, but I realized what happened by the straight line I was then seeing on the face of finished boards, left by an exploded carbide chip.
2> In lite of the gear wear, I'd say spring for a high dollar full synthetic gear oil in hopes of a longer run. Also advising more frequent oil changes, like every time you rotate the carbide. My 2 changes in 12 years didn't stave off the wear, but then there's a LOT of torque on those little guys. To my surprise, none of the bearings seemed bad, though they got swapped out too. Once this thing's open, you want to make the effort worth it. Again, pretty reasonable at $4-$12 per bearing. Also, if you're about to do the same, grab gear #112 (P1021112) and #117 (P1021117). Was down 5 days waiting for parts - had someone told me, I'd have ordered both prior to opening the rebuild project. Less than $20 for the pair(!)
3> As for the leakage, wish I could say precisely where it came from. Check your gear box cover for torque - mine were pretty easy to loosen, leading me to believe tightening would have reduced dampness around the housing. Just occasionally had a "spit" of oil on the first board after it sat for a few days. Main cutter head seal didn't seem bad, nor is it fully bathed in the gear oil. Perhaps too much 30 weight applied to feed roller shafts was migrating through internal dust chip build up(?) Either way, think I got it whipped now...

Conclusion: If you're a relatively small shop like me and shopping for a reliable, accurate, clean/mean running planer, stop looking and just buy this baby. It's a money maker!
(don't get me started on how much I loooove my 10" Grizzly jointer - a killer team for flattening and surfacing rough lumber!)

Thank you, Grizzly, for providing great machines and service to get my business going, and now keeping things running!

Love it 01/18/2019 12:58:48 AM

Arrived in great shape, well packaged, and with a little assembly, ready to plane. I haven't needed to adjust the factory settings (yet), and I have experienced very little snipe, levelness across the board, no roller marks, and as many have commented, very quiet (especially when compared to my Delta 13" bench top planer).

Product excellent. Service not so good 12/12/2018 1:56:04 AM

Got the planer with major damage to the crate. The only major damage to the planer was the plastic chain cover. No word from Grizzley at this time

Great product 12/07/2018 12:22:42 PM

Well i think when you buy a piece of machinery and something that is almost $3,000 that it should be all set and ready to go or have a service rep. to come and set it up right my in feed roller and out feed rollers and chip breaker were all out of speck, i had to make them adjustments and not all people have the right tools to do the job!! Just thought i would bring that up and the shipping was not the best, but i do love the planer!!!

Great Planer 12/05/2018 12:16:06 PM

Great planer and especially happy with the spiral cutter head. So much quieter than straight knife. Well worth the extra cost.

great Buy 11/23/2018 12:20:25 PM

I started using the product right away, Great Machine quite and very smooth finish. The only negative is you need to order the gear box oil with your machine or you won't be able to run it. Very expensive oil.

So far fit and finish of machine is excellent. Very nice cut, with the segmented cutting head. I really enjoy using this planer as well as my Grizzly table saw, 8 Jointer, bandsaw and horizontal boring machine.

Initial impressions: For the price point, unit is well made and well adjusted. Extension tables are reasonably flat by my simple check against straight edge, and set up was straight-forward. So far, have run trials with pine, doug fir, birch, and oak. Finish of cut is excellent, cutting is smooth and quiet. Board thickness across width varies just a bit, about 0.005" across a 6" wide board. I probably will not mess with trying to adjust that out unless it becomes an issue. The thickness adjusting mechanism is a bit tight, but I expect it will mellow out with use. So far, unit seems very good, but I've not had any other surface planers to compare against. Spiral cutterhead is sweet!

Great planer. 09/03/2018 2:14:47 PM

First introduced in 2009 , I've had mine now for 9 years. Replacement inserts quite expensive but considering there longevity well worth it . I have only rotated them once . You will have scalloped milling marks , like all of these type of heads produce , but tear out is all but eliminated. I work with all hardwood, primarily hard maple and cherry , that have a lot of switchback grain , and this planer does a great job . It has stayed in calibration too.
