Significant upgrade to my old portable 12" planer. Shop around and you'll find that this has the same major components as the $2500 planers. All it lacks is a base, which any woodworker can make for him/herself, and save a pile of money. I made some infeed and outfeed tables and the thing eats wood like a beaver. The only challenge was the weight -- I disassembled it into 3 pieces so I could get it downstairs to my shop. If you want to move up to an industrial style planer but don't want to spend $2500, this is your best choice.

Well Done! 07/24/2019 10:22:18 PM

I've had this a couple of months but didn't get the stand finished till recently. It is a very robust machine and handled hard maple with ease. I'm quite happy with it. I did notice that the feed rate control shaft was a little temperamental. I pulled it out for the slow feed rate and it didn't feed at all. It seems you have to pull a little harder for it to engage at the slower rate. There was a small amount of damage from the shipper but Grizzly replaced that part immediately. Works great.

I have used this about everyday for 6 months in my shop. It is a nice planer for the hobby shop. If you are going to put it along a wall with an infeed and outfeed table the dust collection port needs to go the opposite direction. You also have to push the boards pretty hard to get under the infeed roller, doesn't always want to go even if you are only taking a little bit off. If you are looking for a planer and spending this much, I would spend a little more and by the bigger model. You will be happier, i am already trying to sell the one i have.

Thanks Grizzly!

I upgraded from a few alt 735, and man was it an upgrade! This planer produces a beautiful finish and has increadable power.
Love it! Only thing I miss about the freaky is the set stops. My dust collector has a hard time keeping up with this planer. Think it could me improved upon by making the collection shield taper all the way to each side.
All in all I am very happy with this planer. Very glad I upgraded. Great value and product.

Heavy Duty Planer purchase 08/02/2018 12:56:56 PM

Nice surface finishes on planed surface. Doesn't always feed through well and requires a push and a pull now and then, especially for light cuts on longer pieces. Flatness isn't always guaranteed, it is often off .02 - .03 inch (not too bad for wood working, but I'm also a machinist and use calipers instead of a measuring tape), but I'm able to run the piece back through, with the same face up, only rotated 180 deg - and without changing the depth, to get the piece much more flat.

LOVE IT!!!!!! 07/18/2018 1:59:39 PM

I have four 13 inch planers that I have been using for years......this one makes them all look like cheap toys. It is obvious now that I have wasted so much money, time and effort on the small ones. I intend to sell the others and buy another Griz product. As the man on Duck Dynasty says, " Happy, happy, happy".

Machine had a nick in one blade straight out of the crate. Otherwise it has been a good purchase.

Great planer 05/04/2018 2:44:34 AM

This planer is a real workhorse. I was able to plane nearly a thousand board feet of maple cherry and poplar in about 12 hours. I was very impressed with how well it planes. It has plenty of power to hog through cherry and poplar. I had to slow down and take a little less per pass on the maple as I found out You can stall this planer in hard maple but it still has plenty of power if you dont overdo it. The height adjustment works pretty well but the locks could do a better job of holding it in place. Honestly it did pretty well for the most part in that respect but sometimes it would start to move. It only really matters on my final pass anyway so its not really a deal breaker for me. One feature I really like about this planer is that the head moves down on top of the board. This makes planing long stock much easier because you can set your infeed and out feed tables and forget about making adjustments. I purchased the spiral cutting head but I have not installed it yet. The finish of the stock blades is pretty good and you can cut a lot of material very quickly with them. I feel the dust collection hood could be fastened a little better but again not a big deal. I purchased the shop fox roller tables with this planer and I feel they are well worth the money. Combine the shelix head and roller tables with this planer and you have a very capable machine. I am planning to plane my stock to 7/8 inch with the stock blades and switch to the shelix head for final thickness to compare the two. I have been told that you cannot plane nearly as fast with the shelix head but the finish is so much better. Overall the planer is very well built and easy to setup.
As far as snipe goes this planer does a pretty good job of avoiding it. I found with the roller table on the out feed that placing a slight incline greatly reduced the possibility of snipe. Out of 350 boards only a few had any snipe at all and that was more the fault of the particular board and how it was warped. With the exception of hard maple I have found that you can plane multiple boards at a time making better use of your planing time. So far I am glad I chose this model over some of the larger models I was originally going to purchase. The lower price point was a plus and the quality is still there. After I used the planer for the first time I realized that it was plenty of planer for me. Its compact size and adequate power are great in my smaller shop.

Great tool 04/04/2018 12:49:25 PM

I bought this to replace a portable planer that died unexpectedly after only 3 years of medium duty. This arrived quickly and well crated as with my other Grizzly tools. There was really minimal setup and the machine performed great. I was worried about the shorter indeed/outfeed table but it works fine as is. I was used to some snipe with my other planer even when well adjusted but have found NO snipe with this planer. I still have not become accustomed to the power it has and have to be careful not to take too much wood off with each pass. This planer is much more quiet than my portable planer. I am happy I bought this planer and look forward to many years of good service.

Perfect right out of the crate Great value. Glad I decided to not to get the dewalt.

Very impressed! 03/24/2018 1:25:50 AM

I bought a Dewalt DW735 6 years ago and have regretted it ever since. It has throw away blades and started popping it's own breaker after very light use. This planer is a beast! Very precise and smooth.I have already made a couple of large cutting boards and I don't get any snipe...at all.

It's a beast! 03/12/2018 1:30:34 PM

I purchased this to replace a Dewalt DW735 that I have been using for more than 10 years, worked great. I needed something more powerful for planning south american hard woods, I also needed a planner that had a fixed table as I have fixed height roller ball in feed and out feed tables. This fit the needs perfect, however it was on back order for over 4 months. I also ordered the Shelix cutter head, will replace that when the knifes get dull and the gear box oil needs changed. So far its very fast to fast, planned my first board right past the target size in 4 passes. Only complaint so far is taking a skim pass of 0.005-0.010 it leaves impression of the in feed roller as the knifes don't reach the wood. I miss the rubber in feed roller of the Dewalt, change the way I have been working should help. Installed a Wixey digital gauge.

Have not had an opportunity to set the machine up as yet. Packaging and delivery were great. More to follow as soon as I can put the machine to work.

Follow-up to my previous review 04/08/2017 3:48:00 PM

A follow-up to my first review--I just installed the Shelix cutterhead for this planer, purchased through Grizzly. Although there were a few hiccoughs along the way (the smaller shaft end was a few thousands too big for the bearing and had to be lapped down), once in place the new cutterhead worked like a charm--I didn't even need to make any adjustments to the feed rollers! OMG--the finish is unbelievable with the Shelix. Contrary to the negative reports on the Internet, there are absolutely no lines, ridges, etc. So far I've planed poplar and white oak, and the surface looks like it's been sanded with 360 grit paper! I expect the planer to perform like this for quite a while before I even need to turn any inserts. Bottom line--absolutely essential upgrade worth every penny, whether you're a production shop or a weekend warrior.

Excellent Planer 01/25/2017 10:33:34 PM

Easy set up and works great right out of the crate. Highly recommend.

I like this planer 12/29/2016 5:07:50 PM

I manufacture wood shutters from Poplar and make a lot of mouldings..
I have had the DW733 for very long then more recently purchased 2 - DW735's to run as an over and under opposed feed system for faster production.. running moulding blanks both directions at the same time.. with carbide knives on both 735's..
As far as steel knives go the DW 733 has better than the DW 735... because they are thick and last.. so I use the carbide on the DW 735's.. but I can only take 1/64" on ~11" material.. at the faster feed rate ..
SO I BOUGHT THIS G0815 15" planer to use as a rough planer to help size my moulding blanks faster.. AS A PRODUCTION PLANER..
IT HAS MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE production wise.. I size them down with one pass each side then final them with the 735's that are set up for precise final surfacing..
I have not tried the G0815 for finish on the slower feed rate just for production on the faster feed rate and it has big power.. ..
I removed the limiter will plane 1" to 3/4 in 2 passes.. 2 - 6" boards at a time.. no prob..

Love the steel blades they hold up fine I have run thousands of feet with no issue..
I always go easy on a new set of blades ,, slow feed light cut.. just to break them in..

This thing is a monster I have it on a roller cart with exit roller table attached

This planer has sped up my operation tremendously.. I use it to make money..
