Right out of the box, with a quick setup, the machine was a disaster. After ordering and installing the Velcro conversion kit, and going through every bit of the setup and adjustment until it was as good as I could get it - success! I sanded a bunch of cedar boards and the work turned out very nice and the machine held up well. It usually took 4 passes to get the 1 x 8 boards to perfect condition, with 1/8 to 1/4 turn per pass. Any more than that, and the on-board circuit breaker will blow. 12" boards will require slower advance. I ended up taking off near 1/8" from each board to get a perfect board. Added Infeed and outfeed rollers help to minimize the snipe that occurs about 8" from each end, but this is something that has to be tinkered with. I hooked up a dedicated dust extractor at about twice the listed CFM requirement. This removed almost all airborne dust, but there is still a tremendous buildup on the rollers and belt. I found myself standing at the outfeed and brushing the heavy dust back toward the machine as the board came out, where the dust would fall into a plastic tote that I had placed below. It works best if you can fully support the board without touching it as it leaves the machine. If you want a perfect mirror finish, you will have to remove the initial 80/150 paper and install tighter paper. For my work, 150 is plenty good. The board finish can be excellent. The performance of the machine as far as amount of work between sandpaper maintenance and adjustment appears like it will be good/excellent. The dust control could be better, and that's why I gave the machine a "good" rating. This machine will improve the quality of my work, and save a lot of time. I am glad that I bought it. I considered a wider machine, but this will handle 12" width with no problems, so a wider machine is not necessary. A crazy idea would be to buy two of these, and set one up with the coarse paper, and then one with the fine paper, and run the boards through separately. Expensive, but still cheaper than the wider machine. This machine should be shipped with the Velcro kit installed as standard equipment, and not provided as an expensive upgrade. For the price, it's a great shop upgrade.
