I knew I wanted to be able to bend thicker pieces of metal than just 16 or 20 gauge sheet metal. So I got this vise brake with the idea that I could bend thicker steel to make things like brackets, or other types of items. I just tried it tonight on some 3/4" wide, 1/8" thick steel bar. While my 4" vise isn't the largest one out there - and the handle is a bit on the short side - I was able to make some very clean and sharp 90 degree bends in the bar. I sure wouldn't have been able to do that on any regular press brake for under $1,000, so I can say with some certainty that so far I am very impressed!
The only limitation it seems is how much "pull" you can put on your vise, and the length of each bend is limited by the "throat" of your vise, but I was able to put the metal off to the side of the vise jaws and make somewhat longer bends that way. I'm not exactly a big guy - just 170 lbs - so I had to really put all my weight into the last parts of the bends, but this vise brake made them without breaking a sweat... even if I did (a little).
