I can do better than a 3 Star rating, mostly because of the Company not the saw. When I picked it up at the trucking depot the bottom of the box was oil soaked, first RED flag.
Got it out and oil was dripping out of the gearbox output shaft (drives the blade) Great, brand new and I have to work on it, maybe I should have sent it back.
I called support and they were more than happy to send me a $3 seal and have me fix it, packaging was destroyed so I didn't want or know how to send it back.
I took it apart and found the seal in backwards and the output shaft has a keyway in each end to locate the worm gear and drive wheel. The seal was sitting on the edge/beginning of the keyway. they have a POS plastic spacer that is the wrong width to locate the seal on the part of the shaft W/O a keyway. I made a correct spacer and put the seal in the correct way, now it doesn't leak and works great. I really like the saw but common, the person that took this off the stack had to see that oily box and sent it anyway, you ruined a happy moment for me getting a new piece of equipment. I bought on customer loyalty, I have two of your mills also. I will think twice before I buy from you again. Sorry but you really pissed me off, I have to save my money to make a purchase so its a big deal to me. Try giving a crap next time.
The saw is beautiful, I really like it and now it works great, imagine how this review would have been with out the ordeal.
The saw is not badly made but it's not well made either. Missing parts - nuts and washers - along with assembly instructions containing errors and omissions do not help. A complete lack of instructions on replacing the saw blade and guidance on setting blade tension led to numerous issues with the blade falling off the drive wheels when I first started using the saw. The design of the blade cover attachment is awkward - Phillips head screws located in a hard to access place. The miter capability which is the main reason I chose this saw only works well when the cutting head is swung one way. In the other direction the vice bed and adjustable stock are either in danger of getting cut or in the way. In fact, it's nearly impossible to use the auto shut-off if the blade is cutting across the vice bed because the vice bed is too high relative to the position of the saw blade when the blade is fully horizontal. One has to place a (wooden) shim on the vice bed and turn the saw off manually. That's not only inconvenient but it also potentially reduces the accuracy of the cut.
Swinging the saw head to use the mitre is so so - the lock lever is too close to the cylinder that controls downward movement of the cutting head and movement of the head is less than smooth.
The auto cut-off adjustment is clumsy and awkward.
It's good the unit comes with wheels but since there is no handle to move the unit the value of those wheels is greatly diminished.
I haven't made more than half a dozen or so cuts so far but obviously have already discovered quite a few limitations with this saw. Perhaps that's inevitable for the price but some of the shortcomings could have been avoided for little extra cost.
I have 5 pieces of grizzly equipment i have never had a problem with any of them. I miss the store at williamsport pa.
Nice saw. Made a plate so i can stand it up and cut vertically. Would highly reccomend!
My cheapass harbor freight unit broke so, being without a bandsaw, I was triggered and ordered this. I ordered via phone and the dude was super friendly and helpful. Shipping was reasonable, even with the lift gate fee and gay California surcharge
The saw itself is great. The build is great and the hydraulic feed is wonderful. Once adjusted against a square, the miter/swivel head is a godsend. Thanks so much grizzly!
I was very pleased with the ease of ordering and rapid delivery (SAIA trucking was great). I called in to their technical services to get the practical information to help me choose best unit for my needs. I'm very happy with the quality and functions of this unit. It is well made and I think it is a good value. I was missing 1 of the additional 1/4" eccentric blade guides, but customer service handled that without any issues. My only concern is the set up/user manual (and the only reason to give 4 vs. 5 stars). Others may be a lot smarter than me, but I had a difficult time figuring out two aspects of this unit that are critical to proper use. 1) how to make a 60 degree cut without hitting the vice. Got my basic answer from another reviewer, but the actual moving of the vice, to my knowledge, wasn't explained in the manual or on the website. 2) I had trouble moving the swivel head from 60 degrees to the rear 45 degrees....the swivel lock handle/lever used to tighten the swivel head in place would bind up as I moved the head to towards the 45 degree mark. I finally figured out that the handle/lever had to be lifted, rotated, lowered to "ratchet" the swilvel lock to loosen or tighten....I had to loosen significantly to swivel the head to the 45 degree mark. Once I figured this all out, it works very smoothly. Others may have known all this, but it wasn't intuitive to me....unfortunately, when I called Tech Support they were unable to answer either question. I'll give them a pass as maybe I wasn't explaining it clearly enough. A design that requires having to move the vice has been mentioned elsewhere and is worth considering....also the base is hollow but there are no doors, shelves, storage. It seems this would be easy to add a shelf and/or some type of access to the hollow interior.......What I most wanted to get across is that I would strongly encourage Grizzly to add a short video to their product information page that demonstrates these and other critical use components of the unit. I'll do a bit more checking on-line and youTube but obviously I missed any demos if present on Grizzly site. Over all, I really like the Grizzly products, the service and the communication. With all the products they offer, it is probably difficult to answer every type of question, but some "how to set up/use" videos would be a great help. I also have a Grizzly Wood bandsaw and will continue to buy/use Grizzly.
I got this about three months ago I have been very happy with it.
If you have any kind of shop, this is a great saw. I only wish the vise handle had a better hand wheel. But that's not a show stopper for me, accuracy and quality is very good. Shopping around this is the best in it's class, this will increase your accuracy and quality of the job and decrease production time, in my machine shop it's a work horse
Everything arrived in good condition. Assembly and setup was quick and easy.
I have only done straight cuts so far, but they have straight and square.
Although my manual does not mention it, the saw is also usable as a vertical saw with the fabrication of a small table
This saw exceeded my expectations. Great saw for the money. I have made over 200 cuts and it performs very well. Joey in South Carolina.
I bought the to build a welding cart and future metal projects. Would recommend you change the included blade for more accurate and faster cuts. The cart required cuts of 1.5 and 1 inch steel tubing along with 1/4 inch plate. All 45 and 90 degree cuts were accurate. Cut speed was not painfully slow in my opinion even with a slow down feed rate when using the saw for the first few cuts. While a chop saw will be faster, I would rather have the accuracy of the grizzly bandsaw. If I were to make a few suggestions for modifications, they would be the following.
Metal Vise Adjustment- The Allen screw for the handle that attaches to the acme screw which adjusts the distance between the metal vise. Please redesign to have the screw go through the front of the acme screw. It seemed to come loose if you had to open and close the vise jaws for multiple cuts.
Vise Jaws - Why don't you make the front and back sides of the jaws the same height. This would allow the jaws to hold for example two 1.5 inch square tubes for a 90 degree cuts at the same time.
All in all this was a very worthwhile purchase. It it a good value for the price.
I bought this a dew months back and it works quite well once you've worked out all the nuances, i.e.- squaring blade, fine tuning valves, etc. One gripe in particular is that the swivel does go from 45 degrees all the way to 60 degrees on the other side of zero but you can't cut opposite angles without moving the base clamp to the other side of the machine. That probably sounds like nonsense, but trust me, it is an issue. You can swing anywhere from 0-60 or 0-45 but you can't swing from 45 in one direction to 60 in the other direction without relocating the clamp. It would end up cutting into itself. Other than that, it works fine.
I already own some Grizzly wood working tools so I was pretty sure the quality was there. I purchased the G9742 about a month ago and have cut small and thick pieces and am very pleased.
Check out this cut, 1 1/4" X 5 3/4" steel completed in 18 minutes, not an industrial saw but I didn't pay an industrial saw price either. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10208642989458239&set=a.1163021521788.2023614.1415368863&type=3&theater
This is a great saw for the money! To get a saw with miter cutting ability for this price is unheard of! Very well built and works great so far! I've only had the saw for a couple of weeks but I've used it a bunch and it seems very well built! So far I am very pleased! Highly recommend!
First thing the air/gravity thing is worthless. Upon first use the blade hits so hard it jambs and even with the feed running at crawl this happens. The fix is to add a set of springs to counter balance the arm. Once that was done the unit works just fine. I use it a lot and so far I am very pleased (after the mandatory fix)
The angle cut is very handy and fast to change and I extended the stop gauge rods to 30 inched each way so multiple cuts are accurate and easy.
As with almost all China made products they work fine but require a tweak or two to actually work.
I would buy another when the time comes and would tweak the same so it works.
