I just purchased this machine last weekend. It was shipped to me from Bellingham since I only live 40 minutes away. I chose to ship it because my pickup has a electrical issue and I dont trust it to go that far. I bought this nice sander through the Affirm Financing Program. The process was painless and only took a few minutes to get qualified.
Back to the sander, we use these at my work to sand various heavy aluminum parts daily. There we do not baby the equipment, its a heavy duty tool and it gets full and heavy usage.
I looked for a used sander like this for months. Finally settled on a new one and Im really glad I did. When I got it, the UPS man helped me slide it into my old pickup truck from his truck with a hydraulic tailgate. The outside of the box was almost perfect but had one spot where a forklift tine poked it a bit. No damage inside at all but the UPS man made sure that we documented it on the shipping bill.
I was able to wrestle the beast to my shop after opening the box and taking out all of the bolt on parts.
I used a furniture dolly to rest the pallet on and pulled it into the shop. After that, I set about cleaning the bolt on parts with WD-40 and Goof Off. Mostly just wet it down with the spray and waited a couple of minutes, then wiped it off with a couple of shop towels and scraped the edges with a paint stirring stick.
The instruction manual was very well laid out and the parts were easily attached with metric hand tools. Al in all, it took a little over an hour including the cleaning to set it up. Dont hurry, its actually fun to put it together, everything fit perfectly and I was impressed with the fit and finish. Setting the belt tracking was easy.
I made a custom cord to plug it in. I used 10/3 220 volt bulk cable and picked a 250 volt Hubble plugin for my shop power. Everything came along and the sander was complete. I build custom walking sticks with 6061 billet aluminum handles. The 80 grit belt made short work of the profiling process, perfect!
I would highly recommend this sander for any custom heavy duty sanding needs. Its a real tiger! Im sure it will outlive my needs. Now to choose a great Grizzly lathe for prototyping, hmm, now which one....
