I bought this surface plate for several specific reasons. One: I wanted a plate which was heavy enough that it wouldn't have much chance of sliding when I use it to flatten the backs of my wood chisels. However, I wanted something which wasn't so big and heavy that I couldn't move it reasonably easily. In addition, I was interested in the surface plate having ledges to make it easier to pick up which is a real benefit when the plate is heavier. Lastly, I wanted some height for knuckle clearance. This little plate has it all! There are higher quality plates available, but this plate is great for any woodworking task. TIP: Buy one of those non-skid tool box drawer liners to place under the surface plate. It will prevent the plate from scratching things and the non-skid liner holds the plate in place very well indeed!
