Bought this for the 16" drum sander, which I had no luck with using the factory sandpaper that came with the machine. I installed the H&L conversion and immediately went to work and did some nice sanding on 10' red cedar boards. Worked well, so I have already ordered more H&L paper in additional grits. I have not yet tried to remove the sanding strip, replace it with a finer strip, and go back to the first, but this is my plan to get to a finer finish. Using 80+120 does a good job, but I want a furniture grade finish, so I am planning to change papers up to 180 or higher for a second pass. Using 80/120, I find a quick hit with a hand held sander afterward gives a better finish. Something about the cedar and the straight line drum sanding produced a lot of air bubbles, but maybe that is unique to the cedar. On my 16" machine, the conversion kit does not fit, and must be trimmed, which is an inconvenience. Also, although a relatively simple operation, there are no directions with the conversion kit. If you screw up the installation of the base H&L tape, you are done until you order more. I installed the kit myself, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND having a helper. On the 16" machine, the rear drum has a felt material on the factory drum, which obviously has to come off before you put the H&L base tape on. I messed with peeling this off for half and hour, became frustrated, and went to plan B. I took a paint brush and some paint thinner and saturated the felt and let it sit for five minutes. It only took about a cup of thinner. The felt came right off, as well as all of the adhesive, and I was ready to proceed with the installation. Make sure you get every trace of the thinner off before applying the tape. I feel that this kit is the only way to go, and should be installed at the factory, instead of provided at an added cost. I feel that this kit provides an essential part of the operation of the machine. Buy it.
