Wood Stabilization 101
Wood Stabilization with Shiraz Balolia, Founder of Grizzly Industrial, Inc.
Learn from a master woodworker.
Stabilizing wood can make all the difference between throwing away a beautiful piece of highly-figured material and having a rock-solid piece to use for projects. In this video, Shiraz walks us through the basics of the Hold Fast vacuum system. He shows how a vacuum chamber can really help with your projects.
Wood stabilization involves using a chamber, such as the Hold Fast one shown, with a vacuum generator to pull the air from not only the chamber itself, but from inside the material, too. Inside some of the most beautiful wood, such as spalted materials or burls, are natural air pockets inside the wood fiber. The vacuum pulls this air out and replaces it with a resin or sealer that hardens in place. Easily mix in colored dyes to transform the material into something really unique!
The vacuum process is also great for mold making, as Shiraz shows here. When stirring material such as two-part resins or silicon, you naturally introduce bubbles. These bubbles can make the workpiece look unfinished or cloudy if they cure too quickly. Using a vacuum system helps quickly remove the air bubbles, which produces a clearer end result. Grizzly Industrial has everything you need to explore this new technique in one easy-to-shop place here on Grizzly.com!
