Our 18" Variable Speed Open-End Drum Sander offers a lot of versatility and a huge sanding capacity in a small amount of floor space. Sand stock up to 36" wide and 4-1/2" thick! Unlike other open-end drum sanders, the table moves up and down instead of the head, meaning the drum support is much more rigid during sanding operations, giving you more consistent results. Add that to the precision control of the electronic variable-speed conveyor and the dual speed sanding drum, and you'll agree that this feature-packed sander is an incredible value! ETL Listed.

CSA certified meeting CAN/CSA C22.2 #71.2-08 and UL 987 standards!

I use it for sanding cutting boards. It works fine. I had a Jet open end sander at one time but this is far better.

Well made unit. 09/15/2019 12:56:29 PM

Works great with two exceptions. 1) The belt runout ran to the right and I had several attempts adjusting the run out to keep the belt from being torn up on the right side. 2) There is a a slight
change needed in the table height required to get a perfect even sand noticeable when you run a single wide board through the sander and then flip around tor the second half. Small adjustments required for the perfect sanding that I wanted.

Just got this yesterday and already ran several cutting boards through. Had together and running in less than an hour with no hassle with the machine. However when I ordered it I also needed a mobile base and ordered it and picked up at same time. When I ordered it I asked if it the right base and was told if was. But was not told needed the extension bars for it. So after driving 6 hrs one way and back. I found that out when I got back home, so no mobile base for now. Other than that very happy with it.

Love this machine 07/17/2019 5:39:34 PM

I'm putting up tongue and grove pine on the walls of my shop, 5,600 linear feet of it. I wanted to sand it to get the planner marks off. This machine is making very fast work of it.

I've seen a lot of comments on getting it to track properly and after messing with it for an hour or so, I found that the tension was way to tight and was over riding the tracking adjustment. When I eased off on the drive belt tension, the tracking adjustment worked great.

The other issue I had was after sanding A LOT of boards the sanding belt would break - this is my fault for not changing the belt often enough. However, when it breaks it destroys the metal plate inside. I'm assuming the plat is there for dust collection. After repairing the plate several times, I just left it off. But I'm using a pretty powerful dust collector, so it hasn't been a problem. Again, this is really a self inflected issue.

The only negative I have, is that there needs to be some instruction on how to set the drive tension and tracking. There is really no information available on this that I could find. The manual says it's adjusted at the factory, so be carful not to change it without counting the turns of the bolts. That's fine IF it was adjusted correctly at the factory, if not, you're on your own.

Great product but shipping needs improvement. 07/10/2019 2:42:48 PM

Love this drum sander, but, like the last 3 items I purchased which were shipped by freight: they did not put the machine on a proper pallet, this meant the delivery driver could not unload the machine packaged, instead, I had to unpack it on the truck and use manpower to get it into the shop. The driver in all three instances mentioned this is an issue with grizzly often. Obviously its frustrating since I had to pay extra shipping including insuring there was a tailgate.

The GO458Z was a good choice for my luthierie shop. 07/05/2019 3:35:11 PM

I bought the GO458Z after researching numerous other drum sanders. The stand went together easily and after adding the height adjustment wheel my neighbor and I placed it on the wheel system and I started it up and was pleasantly surprised at how quiet it is. The first test run with 80 grit created the smooth correct height I needed on a piece of rosewood. From one side of the conveyor belt to the other there is a 1/64" difference from the factory which I will attempt to correct when I get the time. Overall, I think this will be the ticket for surfacing the spruce, cedar, mahogany and rosewood I use for the soudboards, backs and sides I use for making guitars.

Does a good job of sanding much easier than using a palm sander. Having a little trouble keeping belt tracking in center.

Meets my needs 06/01/2019 12:36:57 PM

I purchased this drum sander for it's size due to my space limitations. So far so good. It handle my cutting board of hard maple and walnut without any problems.

Good sander 05/13/2019 12:59:18 AM

I bought the sander to sand cabinet door panels. The feed conveyor has to be constantly adjusted after several runs. Belt would run hard to the right and would not come back following the directions in the manual. Had to contact Grizzly tech support for directions, they were very helpful but still have to make adjustments. Machine sands very well and level.

Love my new sander!! 03/24/2019 7:50:27 PM

I bought this drum sander about a month ago to replace a flatmaster 30" sander that i had. Shipping was prompt and reasonabe considering the beefy weight of it.

After i figured out gow to get it down to my basement shop (it'll stay down there should i ever decide to move, lol) and got it set up, i was very pleased with it from the start. There is very little learning curve on the operation and i was quickly sanding blank plaques that i make on my cnc machine.

Stock has to be 100% flat and even for cnc carving or the carve comes out uneven and doesnt look right. I was able to sand 5 boards flat in the time it would have taken me to do 1 with the flatmaster.

Needless to say, i am very pleased.

It is a great product but it could use a safety device on the feed side to prevent getting fingers trapped between the board and drive belt.

A great drum sander for it's size. 03/06/2019 10:51:08 PM

Due to a reduction in overall floor space of my shop by 40%, I was forced to purchase a new a smaller drum sander. After trying several sizes and brands I decided to purchase the Grizzly G0458Z. I have got nothing short of superior performance from this sander. I'm very happy I chose Grizzly. Great value for the Money!.

Its good 03/06/2019 2:48:52 PM

Apon receiving and opening the box parts fell out. Had to figure out were they went. Within a hour of use the chain tension gear for lowering and raising the deck underneath fell off. Spent 1/2 hour getting chain lined up to get the tension gear to screw back in. The deck was not flat and with no instructions how to level, figured it out on my own. Now that all the kinks are worked out... this is a good drum sander.

I finally I have my Drum Sander 01/03/2019 12:01:45 PM

Been waiting for this a long time, well worth it, great tool, saves time,
The only thing I recommend is that you get a small dust collector, and install it underneath, and tie it into
a dust collector receptacle' so as they both come on & off at the same time, it throws a good amount of saw dust

Not what I expected from Grizzly. Low power causes drum to stop under light load. Difficultly keeping conveyor belt running straight. Was not true from factory and took a lot of time and multiple adjustments to get set. Still needs adjustment periodically. With anything there is a learning process and I am getting there. Machine does work well and has good dust collection ability.

I finally received my unit after it had been on back order for several months. When I opened the box and prepared to assemble the unit, I soon discovered that there was no hardware package included with the unit. I contacted customer service and the agent I spoke to said he would get the required hardware out to me right away. I received a box from Grizzly a few days later with enough hardware to assemble the base of the unit, and with the help of a friend, I was able to lift the unit onto the base and bolt it down. When I tried to attach the adjusting wheel to the unit, I discovered the bolt that I was sent was to large. I again contacted Grizzly customer service, and informed them of my problem. I gave them the part numbers I needed, from the units owners manual. A few days later I received another box, that contained the same over sized bolt that I had received before, that did not fit. At this time I adapted hardware that I had to make final assembly. I really like the unit, and it does a great job, but I am rather disappointed with the support. It is sad when you can not supply the correct parts, even after I provided the correct part number, straight out of the owners manual.

Get what expected of price. 08/22/2018 2:13:16 PM

Usual problems with overseas products, loose bolts and improper factory adjustments. Feed belt had no more adjustment on right side and belt still tracking to right. So tight on right side it bent the bracket and wore out bushings in about 2 hours use. Flipped bracket with bushing over 180* to wear on good side. Found bushing cracked in two places. Called to order more bushings under warranty. Parts on order, not in stock. Will need to take time at some point to modify this machine with bearings instead of brass bushings and do some realigning of feed motor and rollers. No way this belt should be this tight to track correctly.

I chose this machine because of the ability to do 4" thickness. The price was good so I think once I do some modifications to this machine it will perform absolutely great.
If you have the patience and ability to perform modifications, repairs and adjustments to machinery, it is a good buy. If not spend more $ and buy American made. If you don't need 4" capability there are many other machines to consider.

This review is based on the experience with my machine. If not for the problems encountered maybe due to a Monday morning bad employee at the factory, this machine would get an excellent review.

Purchased almost a year ago. 07/25/2018 4:05:30 PM

Have been using for almost a year now. Only problem I am having is keeping the feed belt/pad in-line. It was off a hair out of the box. Now, I'm 99% sure it is my fault where it is at now. I have been adjusting on the fly, I have not taken the time to adjust it properly, been too busy. Even with me, the sander is working great. A must get if you are running any flat pieces. If I get it adjusted with out taking engineering classes I'll bump it to 5 stars.
