Wood Stabilization 101 with Shiraz | woodworking #shorts
Wood stabilization starts here on Grizzly. com:
Stabilizing wood can make all the difference between throwing away a beautiful piece of highly-figured material and having a rock-solid piece to use for projects.
In this, Shiraz Balolia, Founder of Grizzly Industrial, Inc. , walks you through the basics of the Hold Fast vacuum system available on grizzly. com and how a vacuum chamber can really help with your projects.
Wood stabilization involves using a chamber, such as the Hold Fast one shown, with a vacuum generator to pull the air from not only the chamber itself, but from inside the material, too.
Inside some of the most beautiful wood, such as spalted materials, or burls, are natural air pockets inside the wood fiber. The vacuum pulls this air out and replaced it with a resin or sealer that hardens in place. Mix in your favorite colored dye, and you can transform material into something really unique!
The vacuum process is also great for mold making, as Shiraz shows here.
When stirring material like two-part resin or silicon, you introduce bubbles. These bubbles can make the workpiece look unfinished, or even cloudy if they cure too quickly. Pulling a vacuum helps quickly remove the air bubbles, helping produce a clearer end result.
