Bring home the functionality and features of a much larger lathe with this compact G0838 16" x 24" Variable-Speed Wood Lathe. Don't let its small size fool you, this stout machine has plenty to offer. With a 2 HP 3-phase motor using a VFD to operate on single-phase 220V power, this lathe gives you the extra torque needed for turning hard woods at really low speeds. Additionally, the headstock slides along the precision-ground cast iron bed and can be locked in place on the tailstock side for outboard turning of much larger pieces. This machine is a bowl-turner's dream!

Replacement for old Shopsmith 04/19/2020 2:02:16 PM

The motor speed control is a lot more stable and controllable than the old belt drive. I like the wide range of speeds, too. The fit and finish was very good. I've done a couple pens and wine stoppers and had great results.

Great lathe for intermeditate to advanced turners. 01/01/2020 3:40:04 PM

I have had the lathe for a month now and have taught several bowl turning classes with it. Overall I am very pleased with the construction and performance.
Some pros:
I love the speed control and 2HP power that has good torque across the whole speed range - I moved up from a 1HP variable speed machine.
It is sturdy and well made and good and heavy.
I like that the metal box for the motor electronics is steel so I can attach a magnetic work light to the top or side as needed. I also mounted a bracket to it to hold my 2.5" adjustable dust collection hose.
I felt the need to file down all the machined edges of the bed and tool rest etc. as some were sharp.
I am bothered by the electronic motor drive "singing" which triggers my tinnitus. A spectrum analyzer shows a peak at 18KHz and another at 9KHz it it the latter that really bothers me. I guess I'll get used to it, but I come away from a long turning session with that high pitch staying in my ears.
The tachometer holds a speed value long after the machine has stopped. Weird. It would be nice it it updated speed a bit faster while adjusting the speed.

A simple thing, but I glued a small magnet to the top near the spindle so I can leave the index pin there so it is secure and readily accessible.

Very smooth, plenty of power. Not too big, just right for me. Last, but not least, it is stout; lots of cast iron. Very good finish on the bed.

Great Bowl Lathe 08/19/2019 10:12:39 PM

Tons of versatility and was a great improvement over my last lathe. The smaller bed length is great in a smaller shop. Pretty much all of the options one could want especially for bowl turning.

Just received 08/19/2019 2:02:41 AM

I just received my machine. I had a problem with the head stock, but Grizzly took care of it immediately. I cant say enough about their customer service. Ive turn a small bowl just to check out some of the features. The machine runs smooth and appears to have plenty of power. Ill put in another review later.

8/17/2019: This is an excellent machine, runs great , and perfect for my shop. Really like be able to move the headstock along the rails so you can work without the stand impeding your access.

A well built lathe 06/15/2019 1:42:37 PM

This lathe has exceeded my expectations. It is well built, smooth operating, and easy to clean up. The lathe replaced an old lathe that was over 60 years old and I wished I had purchased it sooner. I purchased the T28372 Bed/Tool Post Extension for the lathe and mounted it on the end of the lathe for storage (see photo).

I purchased my GO838 11-10-18. the lathe is great for turning small bowls, but when i looked into the outboard turning, the lathe will only turn a 16" bowl. 28" would be a flat or very shallow platter. grizzly said they have nothing in works to actually turn larger bowls. lathe still works great!

I enjoyed my new lathe I'm having a good time with it.The only thing I was upset about it was when you jack the price up on it when the tariffs had name been put in place yet
