The G0454Z has a spiral cutterhead with 4-sided German-made carbide inserts for ultra smooth surfaces.

Love my new planer, see my recommendations 08/07/2020 3:06:17 PM

The 454z planer arrived looking like the freight had bounced it around a bit going up my very steep driveway in the backroads of WV. Still, the planer operated 100% right out of the box. After checking the setup with a dial indicator, I found it to be within a few thousandths of the recommended clearances and did not have to adjust the head or rollers at all. I did find that the motor fan was a bit too loose, and was able to tighten it very quickly with a Philips screwdriver. My only design recommendation for Grizzly is that the dust hood and side panel bolts are threaded right through the sheet metal instead of having nuts welded on the backside to prevent stripping out those fasteners. I don't anticipate this being a problem for now, but after many years of taking those panels on and off the threads are likely to strip since there is only one or two threads through the sheet metal in those 2 spots. Otherwise, the product is GREAT and the spiral head is amazing in figured woods and even on epoxy inlays. GO BUY ONE, it is worth the money.

Have not used it enough to say how good it is but so far so good

I'm totally satisfied with this product accept? 09/13/2019 7:13:56 PM

The only issue I have so far is with the foot pedal mechanism that raises the machine up off the floor for moving around the shop, as it keeps falling off the cam and drops to the floor. I have to constantly check it and step on it to make sure it is not going to fall off the cam. It did this once and busted the plastic on one of the fixed pads. Engineering needs to adjust the cam so that it is a little more over center to keep this from happening. Other than this issue I am satisfied with the product. I own the Grizzly 10 inch floor saw and 9 in grizzly Joiner.

Great poduct 06/19/2019 2:40:28 PM

The planer is exceptionally quite. Leaves a smooth surface. Plenty of power, one complainit is the drive pulleys, they are ruff and painted, after 1 hr of planing there was a 1/4 cup of rubber in the cover. After another hour there was still more in the cover. The manual said this is normal. The pulleys should be machined to a smooth finish, If I bought a pulley as ruff as these I would reject them. Belt life is going to be short!

Bought it not knowing how easy it is to set up, but you need help installing the extensions. Surprised at how quite it runs.

Works like a gang of angry beavers 04/18/2019 11:05:59 AM

I have ran approx. 800 bd. ft. of wht. oak, produces a very nice finish some of the boards were 19'' wide. My only complaint is the gearbox fill is in a terrible place to fill with oil otherwise would have given 5 stars. I still love how good planer operates.

Liking this machine! 04/16/2019 10:36:11 AM

It's only been a month but I've noticed a huge difference in our planing efforts. Machine cuts like butter.

Hell Yeah! I have never been more excited about a shop tool or a piece of machinery in the past 65 years; which is how long I've been working with wood. My older brother and I would break into our father's woodworking shop when I was but 8 years old (in 1954) and my older brother was 10. In dad's shop was this old 12 inch planer; a Boice-Crane which, at the time, was already twenty years old!
Dad gave the planer to me years later and it planed many feet of lumber, but it just couldn't stand the test of time. It wore out. In February of 2019, my wife bought me the latest acquisition to my workshop; a Grizzly 20" Model GO454Z with a 5 HP motor. WOW! If you're looking for something that can get the job done, this is the one... but you'd better have adequate floor space and the electrical ampacity to handle the beast! If I were to have any complaints about my new addition, it would be this: Why couldn't the Grizzly engineers come up with a right-handed wood chip ejection port? The one that came with my planer was such that the port was left-facing and I needed one which faced to the right, so.... I "modified" it... with a large hammer and some black paint.

Nice planer that needs 3 things 02/17/2019 2:32:03 PM

This is a solid planer that does a great job. There are 3 things I'd really like to see:
1) An indicator showing how much is being planed off on each pass. This machine is an upgrade from my DeWalt bench top planer but the DeWalt had an indicator showing how much is being take off on each pass.
2) One complete turn of the handwheel is "APPROXIMATELY 1/16". This machine should be engineered so that it is EXACTLY 1/16" on each turn.
3) THERE IS NO OIL IN THE GEARBOX. It's ridiculous that I had to go to an auto parts place buy the gear lube, and a dispenser that would reach the tiny hole tucked away in the machine to fill the gearbox. There should be a big red tag on the on/off switch stating that there is no oil in the gearbox.

Its a beast 02/13/2019 11:53:53 PM

Its a great planer to have in the shop. For the most part there was little adjustment and alignment to do. Only thing negative would be i wish they would beef up the shipping container and either include oil for gear box or let you know before hand.

I purchased the Grizzly G0454Z Planer with the Spiral cutterhead the week before Christmas and I am very pleased with the workmanship, performance, fast delivery, and the quality of the paint, adjustment of everything and without anything to do except put grease in the gear box, as it isn't shipped with grease in it. The machine is at least 50 percent quieter than my older straight knife Grizzly 20" planer that I've had for years and sold. This is the 4th Grizzly machine that I have upgraded to in the last 2 years of which they were also older model Grizzly machines. My only regret is that I should have done it sooner because they are such a joy to use.I would highly recommend this machine to anyone that is interested in woodworking. In my opinion, this is the best machine on the market for the money. Thank you. Jerry

Love this planer! 01/18/2019 9:30:07 PM

The planer arrived in excellent condition and was fairly easy to set up. There could be a note in the set up procedures about how to add oil to the gear box. I only learned through a phone call to Grizzly that you can remove two screws to fill the Gear box from the top instead of trying to fill it thru the fill hole as per the instructions. Time will tell but initial use has been awesome.

seems to be everything advertised. it is smooth and more quiet than my 13" twin blade. if you could figure out how to ship it so that it is easier to get off the pallet that would be great. it is easy to move around with the wheels. had to build a dust collection connector since the hood connection is not common. it is a heavy duty machine

Outstanding Planer. Exceeded my expectations. 12/12/2018 3:31:09 PM

I am over joyed with this machine. Easy to set up. No problems in the shipping. Machine exceeded my expectations. You will not be disappointed in this machine.

undecided at present time 11/05/2018 9:17:36 PM

So far purchased in March 1918 for one price received in September 1918 with a tariff attached. Arrived with shipping create heavily damaged. Sent pics to grizzly. Upon assembly the machine was not level. Contacted Tech support was advised on techniques for leveling and during process found front leveler was broken. Currently working with grizzly tech to resolve problem. Staff to this point is courteous and wanting to resolve issue. not happy with timing to resolve current issue. Had to call grizzly to find out on resolving current issue they had to look up issue which took some time. Waiting for management to contact within next 48 hours. Machine runs well. Very quiet . Hopefully can resolve issue and would be extremely happy with this machine. Final disposition on product pending\. Issue was resolved Grizzly sent a bear claw mobile base. The lady who worked on this issue was extremely helpful in getting this resolved. As for performance still undecided

Solid Planner once issue was resolved 07/21/2018 3:33:48 PM

I waited months for this product and it finally arrived in late May. Unfortunately it had a problem.

I went through all of the setup, cleaned all the shipping grease, and fired it up. When I run a board through the left side works great, but on the right side it growls as the board is fed through. Cutting is good on both sides, just a growling/squeaking noise on the right side. I discussed with Grizzly support and they promptly sent out some parts (bearings, bushing blocks, gasket, etc.) to change out to address the noise. I talked to a number of different tech support people and they all provided advice and suggestions. I did a lot of trouble shooting - lower or raising various components to see how it impacted the noise. I ended up tearing the machine apart and replacing one of the cutter head bearings. I was disappointed that it did not fix the problem and was ready to send it back for Grizzly to fix. Their tech support called me one more time and the individual I talked with this time had a better knowledge of the machine and recommended I adjust the pressure bar. That ended up being the problem. I had adjusted them to spec, but by adjusting the noisy side the problem was eliminated!

The machine is solid and cuts nicely. It is much quieter than my old 15 inch planner with straight knives and the cut is better. I would recommend the machine, but know that if there is an issue it may take some time to resolve as you will have to do the work unless you want to send it back. This is my second machine from Grizzly and the first, a 12 inch jointer has performed great with no issues.

I am quite pleased with the way it works and the finish on the wood. although not all 5 hp motors are the same My older 1033 with a spiral cutter head handles 18 inch oak with ease. but it is rated with much high amperage but I am still pleased with this machine for the price difference.

After having to wait 27 weeks to receive this planer and having to jury rig the dust collector as it is not a true 5" inside or out I think the planer is great. It is no louder than my dust collector and planes wood very smooth.

Great planer, but back ordered forever 04/12/2018 1:19:33 PM

Ive had this planer a few weeks and have been very pleased with it. Seems to be very well constructed, as I expect from Grizzly products. I own several Grizzly machines and have been pleased with all of them. The only negative was the lead time. I ordered this planer last summer and never received it until March 2018

Love this tool ! 02/12/2018 10:08:03 PM

I waited over 6 months for this item to come from backorder. Had a reasonable back-up planer, but wound up pushing out a few projects that
would benefit from the larger, more powerful tool. I'm glad it did. It cuts smooth, feeds smooth and produces minimal snipe.
This is my second major grizzly product, and both have performed excellent right out of the crate.

looks good so far 02/10/2018 6:16:30 PM

I like the fact that it is much quieter than my old planer. It seems to do a good job on figured woods that tended to chip out on the old knife style cutters.

This planer is everything I was hoping it would be. It was well-crated, and arrived in perfect condition. It was easy to set up, and worked perfectly right off. I have put a ton of walnut through it, some pine, and some ash so far, and it all has been excellent! This is the first spiral cutter head machine I have used, and I'm sold. It's fast, smooth, and quiet. I have nothing but praise for the machine itself.

As a side note, I knew it was on back order, but I didn't expect to have to wait almost 7 months for it to arrive after ordering it. I'm not so sure I'll do that again. I have seen a lot of comments bashing UPS Freight in other reviews...now I know why - their customer service is worse than terrible!

Overall I'm very happy with this planer. I agree with the review below...be prepared to adjust everything. You will definitely need a rotacator. All the fine tuning however is more than worth it for the price. You'll need a pretty strong dust collector. My 1.5hp Jet still doesn't get all the shavings.

Beast of a Machine! 08/14/2017 2:17:20 PM

Well built piece of machinery. Great deal! 3 month delay for delivery was annoying but glad to have it now. Switch was not functioning on delivery but easily fixed. Ran the first board through it and it is smooth with no tear out!

This is a beast, easy set up and excellent finish. 06/13/2017 12:39:50 PM

It was worth the wait. This is a beast, easy set up and excellent finish. I run 1800 board feet of latch in an afternoon.

This Planer is SWEET!! 06/06/2017 12:27:51 PM

The smoothness of the cut and almost zero snipe is impressive.
Two cautions- 1) Be prepared to adjust everything, If you do not have a rotacator order one at the same time it will be needed.
2) The exhaust port is larger than 5". I heated one of my 5" to 4" reducers with a heat gun and used a container to flare it out to fit the port.
That being said love this planer.

Beautiful Machine 06/06/2017 2:39:52 AM

No adjustments needed and the gearbox did not need any oil. Nice shipping container and manual. Easy to follow instructions and everything was there. No snipe on the hundred board feet it has seen thus far. The shippers almost tore the shipping container apart though. One of the three skid bottom rails was missing so the 900 pound machine rocked precariously when offloading. Just pitiful shipping service!!

A great planer. I love how quiet it runs with the helical cutter head 06/04/2017 11:45:37 PM

I'm a stairbuilder and this, but I along with the 12 inch jointer and and the 15-30 inch wide belt sander is all I needed to make my own posts, rail, and treads, skirt boards and more. Love them all!

This was a great purchase couldn't be happier. Right away I ran a bunch of knotty white oak through it and there was no problems tore right through it.
